Kowa 160 ss suspension forksWhen you think about buying a new fork there are usually only 4 brands you consider, Marzocchi, Rockshox, Fox and Manitou (there are others Pace, Rond etc), but now there’s another name to add to your list of possible fork candidates, Kowa.

Kowa are a Japanese suspension company based in Osaka. Their products have been mostly triple crown downhill forks, but with the decreasing popularity of DH in Japan, Kowa have decided to enter the long travel single crown arena,

The 160ss comes in two forms, a coil version with travel fixed at 160mm and an air version, which as well as being lighter also offers a cool adjustable travel feature. The adjustable travel is operated in a way similar to Marzocchi’s ETA lockout, i.e you turn a lever push the forks down to your desired height/stroke length and then twist the lever again to hold them at the position you choose. The process is said to be very simple and quick to perform with less fiddling around  compared to a U turn type solution.

Other feature are adjustable rebound, cast magnesium lowers, hard anodized stanchions and a surprisingly low weight of only 2.3kg (5 pounds) thats about half a pound lighter than a Marzocchi 66, which is what most riders will compare them to.

Overall they look like a very competative alternative to the norm and something which will make you and your bike stand out from the crowd.

Keep posted for more Kowa news and a future review.

MacMahone Angus StemMacMahone are not only known for their beautifully designed unique looking frames, they also produce some excellent components ranging from handle bars and stems to cranks and wheelsets.

Here we have the Clyde Stem and Angus Handle bars. Both items are super light and strong and are available in either 25.4mm or 31.8mm widths and clamping areas, although they have slightly different names in these guises (Angus 30 for 31.8mm bars, and the Weevil for a matching stem).

As with all of MacMahones components quality, indviduality and attention to detail are paramount.

MacMahone Clyde StemThe Clyde stem is precision cnc’d from 6061-T6 aluminium. Any material which isn’t needed has been cut away to make for one strong yet light stem, even the bolts are 6AL-4V Titanium items to help bring the overall weight down to 165g.

The Angus bars are 7075-T6 double butted aluminium. The width is a lengthy 710mm (plenty of material to chop down if they’re to wide) with a comfortable 9 degree backsweep and 5 degree up. The weight is 282g for the 25.4 mm model.MacMahone Angus 25.4 handle bars

If your thinking of building up a light race bike this year, then maybe the Angus and Clyde are a duo you should look in to.

New Blur LT

Well last night I was under the impression you would have to wait until May to get more info on the new Blur LT, but luckily you don’t as pics and details arrived in my inbox this morning!

Just as we guessed the new Blur LT gets more rear wheel travel, 140mm up from 135mm and it also gets a lower stand-over height 712mm for the medium frame from 773mm (I wish I was as good at guessing lottery numbers!)

The improvements don’t stop there though as Santa Cruz have completely redesigned the Blur LT frame for 08.

New features include:

  • A molded carbon top link.
  • Replacable dropouts with bottle opener (this is a must!) instead of just a replacable hanger.
  • Thicker 15mm pivot axles, with new bearings and grease ports!
  • Improved geometry for use with longer travel forks.
  • And an improved shock leverage, and less chain growth through the rear wheels path!

Check out the comparison chart below for more details on the Blur LT’s upgrades.

blurlt.jpgApparently, yes! Santa Cruz are ready to unveil a new Blur LT. We’re not sure what will be different from the current model, maybe more travel and a lower stand-over?, but you’ll know as soon as we do.

Expect full details and pics in May

As usual we were into the riding so much none of us really wanted to stop and take photos! Plus it was pretty chilly at the top of the trail.

Anyway thats enough excuses, yesterday we had a change of plan and decided to explore Fushan (yes again), but this time we managed to find some really cool trails leading off down different sides of the mountain.

Here are some of the photos. Hopefully we’ll ride there next Sunday and get more photos of us riding.

MacMahone Randall WheelsThe Randall wheelset is aimed at the freeride/all mountain/xc market.

The set uses MacMahone’s Feather front hub, which is 20mm or 9mm Q/R friendly, and thier Chevailer rear that can also be converted from 9mm Q/R to 12mm bolt through and the Randall rims are 32mm wide 6061 T6 aluminium with a welded join and eyelets. Even the spokes are special patened items, and have been cold forged to provide up to 20 times more strength over a regular single guage spoke!

Weights are a respectable 1057g for the front and 1234g for the rear (in Q/R guise). How much? Well, don’t expect much change from 3600RMB!

Check out the MacMahone website for more info.
